Adopt NI was created in 1989 following a change in legislation, to provide support for adults facing the challenges of adoption. The organisation has since extended its services, to birth parents and adults separated from their family of origin through being in care.

FamilyTracing and Records Officer
2 x part time
As a skilled and resourceful genealogist or researcher, you will deliver the necessary research required for information recovery and family tracing for adults linked to the Mother and Baby Home, Magdalene Laundries & Workhouses in Northern Ireland. You will need to be able to access public records offices and archives in NI regularly as part of your role.
Some Key elements of the Role:

Build accurate and extensive multi-generational family trees using traditional genealogical records e.g. census, vital records, probate, land records.

Navigate digital repositories e.g. Ancestry, National Archives of Ireland, Findmypast, FamilySearch and physical archives e.g. PRONI to locate, transcribe and analyse historical documents including census records, vital statistics (birth, marriage and death), probate files, and military records.

Interpret raw DNA data and match lists from major testing platforms e.g. Ancestry DNA, MyHeritage, FTDNA, GEDMatch. Apply advanced genetic tools such as chromosome mapping, WATO and triangulation to determine the most likely relationship paths.

Maintain the highest standards of confidentiality and navigate the sensitive emotional nature of biological discoveries with empathy and professionalism.
